This volume appears to record the toll of the 1793 Yellow Fever epidemic in a particular area of Philadelphia, beginning with the Market Street Wharf. It appears to note by building, whether residence or business, the number of people who have died, those quarantined, those buried, those who have fled or have stayed and survived. There is no key to explain all the notations. Other notations indicate nationality, weather conditions and very rarely family names. This "census" was taken Oct. 4 to Nov. 7, 1793.
About one-third of the volume has since been reused as a scrapbook, and its pages covered with unrelated newspaper articles, mostly poems, circa 1838. |
