Summary: This folder contains former volume 6, pages 1 to 70 of the extra illustrated version of John Galt's The Life, Studies and Works of Benjamin West. It contains letters to and from West concerning the Royal Academy of Arts of which West was the President, an unsigned, undated statement discussing the state of historical painting in relation to West's painting The Death of General Wolfe and the prints done after West's other historical paintings, personal correspondences, and prints of notable contemporaries and historical figures. The material dates between 1787 and 1822, with the bulk between 1800 and 1815. Oversize pages are in box 3, folder 7.

John Galt wrote two volumes covering the life of Benjamin West. The first was published in 1816 and contains biographical information from West’s birth to his travels in Italy in the 1760s. The second volume contains West’s move to London and his subsequent career as historical painter to King George III, and ends with West’s death in 1820.
