520 |a Research notes for Lee Arnold's doctoral degree at the University of South Africa (Unisa). Lee Arnold, in his advanced years, finally completed his doctoral studies. Some may recall that 26 years ago he had begun a PhD program in Library Science at Rutgers Univeristy (New Brunswick, NJ) but dropped out of that program two years later when he moved to Philly to work at HSP. In 2012 he found out about an online doctoral program (DLitt et Phil) in archives through the University of South Africa. He successfully defended his thesis in March 2016 and will be heading off to Pretoria to graduate on May 23rd.
520 |a In his thesis, Refining Metadata for Genre Archives: A Case Study of Travel Archives, Lee Arnold addresses access to what he terms genre archives, which have perennially been a challenge for researchers. While users seek material on specific genres, the metadata put in place do not always adequately support the desired access. Travel archives often fall into a scholarly no-man's-land, in that they are not necessarily viewed as serious academic undertakings, especially those that are more representative of leisure travel. Arnold addresses this common misconception and makes clear the value of travel archives, providing suggestions for enhancing their access and proposing that similar remedies may benefit other genre collections.
