520 |a These four images are of a cake HSP had commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversry of its building at 1300 Locust Street. HSP was founded in 1824 and purchased the property (then the Robert Patterson mansion) at 13th & Locust in 1883. With generous assistance from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a new state-of-the-art fireproof building (one of the first purposely built as a library in the U.S.) was finally dedicated on April 6, 1910. The cake was made by Classic Cake in Mount Laurel, NJ (www.classiccake.com). It debuted at the 2010 Founder's Award dinner on April, 29, 2010. The building cake (designed from a photo taken of HSP) was made of vanilla pound cake covered in fondant and filled with vanilla buttercream frosting. It was meant to feed 50 people (although it fed a lot more!) and it cost $850.00. HSP supplemented the building cake with 3 sheet cakes--also vanilla pound cake with vanilla buttercream frosting (for an additional $77.95). The cake was devoured by HSP employees, who also shared a wing of the cake with its bibliophile neighbor, the Library Company of Philadelphia.
