Wills covering the entire colony of New York were recorded with the Prerogative court, and later with the Court of probates under the first constitution of the state. A portion of the files are in the office of the clerk of the Court of appeals in Albany, while others, chiefly those relating to Westchester and counties farther south, were transferred by legislative act in 1797 to the Surrogate's office of New York county. cf.
