Item Description: Originally issued in numbers: v. 1, Jan. 1747-May 1749; v. 2, April 1750-Aug. (?) 1752, but not printed in the "American magazine" as first announced by the publisher; left unfinished at the author's death in October 1752.
To vol. 2 of this copy is prefixed the t.-p. of "Vol. II, part I "with imprint, "Boston: Printed and Sold by D. Fowle in Ann-Street; where may be had the first Volume bound or stitch'd. Also some odd Numbers to compleat imperfect Setts. 1750." There are many references in v. 2 to the year 1752 (cf. pages 394, 395, 399, 412, etc.)
The three maps described in the Introduction to v. 2, p. 20-21 ("Originals composed and lately printed in the several countries") are wanting in this copy and in all L. C. copies of different editions of the "Summary"; the "Map of the Dominions of New-England", and that of "New-York, the Jersies and Pensylvania, published 1749, by Mr. Evans in Pensylvania", are found separately in the map collection of the Library of Congress.
Sections concerning North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, noted in "The author to the reader", p. ii, v. 1, as part of "Vol. II, Part 1" are not found in this work.
"A digression concerning the smallpox": v. 2, p. 392-414.
Vol. 2 was issued after the author's death with additions (p. 417-440, "from Mr. Salmon's Georgraphical and historical grammar, printed in London, 1757").
P. 425-440 are wanting in this copy.
