China's Retreat was a 361-acre plantation on the Delaware River, near Bristol, Pa., purchased in 1796 by A.E. van Braam Houckgeest. Van Braam Houckgeest worked for the Dutch East India Company in Macao and Canton, China for a number of years before being appointed consul to North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia in 1783. While a resident of Charleston, S.C., he purchased property and operated a general supply house on 41 Bay Street. Sometime in 1790, he moved his family back to Holland. |
