Summary: Nicholas Vagionis was born in Canea, on the island of Crete, in 1902. He immigrated to the United States in 1921 and later entered the civil service in the United States Treasury Department, where he remained until his retirement. He was a leading figure in New York City's Greek-American community. The collection documents Vagionis' activities as officer, speaker, and fundraiser for Greek-American organizations and as organizer of the annual Greek Independence Day celebration in New York City. Included are correspondence, speeches, articles, scrapbooks, clippings, programs and other printed materials. The unprocessed additions include five boxes and one scrapbook, all labeled "Vagionis clippings for microfilming."
