Summary: |
George Hanstein (d. 1996) served as an officer of the Carl Schurz Memorial Foundation (CSMF) from 1940 to 1962. In 1957, Hanstein was elected CSMF's executive director.
This collection consists mostly of papers regarding Paul Hessemer's oral history interview with Hanstein in 1995. There are four audio cassette tapes and transciptions of the interview. There are also letters from Hessemer to various individuals regarding the interview, including the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies. Archivists from the Balch sent Hessemer a list of questions to ask Hanstein, as well as inventories of their holdings of the National Carl Schurz Association records. In addition, there is an envelope of Hanstein's papers that Hessemer received from Hanstein's family after his death. Included are mostly personal but some business material, such as annual reports, correspondence, photographs, and English- and German-language newspaper articles. Two main groups of letters include those congratulating Hanstein on his appointment to CSMF's executive director in 1957 and letters regarding his retirement from the foundation in 1962.
There is also a volume, published in 1947 by CSMF, entitled "Das Klein-Geschichtsbuch der Hutterischen Brueder." |
