520 |a The Committee of Women to Inquire into the Condition of Friends Manumitted Slaves was a Quaker benevolent group established by the Quaker Meeting of Philadelphia in 1781 to investigate the circumstances of formerly enslaved people recently manumitted by Quakers. The committee was initially connected to a similar group of male Friends, but the two committees finally decided to conduct their work separately. Women involved in this group visited people in their homes to assess their needs, and to recommend how the Friends could be of assistance to formerly enslaved members of their community. The minutes cover the period between November 11, 1781 and July 30, 1785. The minute book lists members of the committee, which included Margaret Porter, Susannah Jones, Elizabeth Drinker, Mary Smith, Sarah Thomas, Annabella Crissen, Phebe Pemberton, Hannah Jones, Hannah Williams, Mary Brigs, Ann Ambler, Mary Dickinson, Margaret Head, Mary Wister, Margaret Eliout, Sarah Wister, Elizabeth Rogers, Deborah Morris, Margery Norton, Margaret Hart, Hannah West, Hannah Drinker, Rachal Offley, Sarah Price, and Esther Fisher.
