Colonel Atlee was captured by the enemy at the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776. He was released in a prisoner exchange in October 1778 and served as a member of the Continental Congress from 1778-1782. He held numerous other public offices until his death in 1786. This journal extract contains details of the Battle of Long Island and Samuel Atlee's subsequent capture by the British.
