These two receipt books belonged to members of a Philadelphia family, the Bentleys. Both books make reference to payments for a variety of repairs and maintenance work done to a house on Fourth Street, below Poplar. David Bentley was a Philadelphia coppersmith and regulator of weights and measures. According to a notation made on the inside front cover of the earlier receipt book, 1823-1835, the book belonged to John Bentley, 1821. Most of the entries in this book, however, record payments by an Mrs. Elizabeth Bentley. In 1823, she makes several payments for costs relating to the burial of her husband. Perhaps this was John. The book includes receipts of payment from David Bentley to Elizabeth as well as from Elizabeth to David. The second receipt book, 1822-1857, was used exclusively by David Bentley. It records personal expenses, including groceries and house repairs. A few entries make reference to copper items. |
