In the summer of 1940, Lois Dean of Dalton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, invited her cousin, Margaret (Peggy) Goodman, a trained artist from New York who worked in the advertising department of B. Altman and Company, on a cross-country road trip to Denver, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah. Participants other than Margaret and Lois included Lois’s son and daughter, Robert and Adelle, and Lois’s cousin, Prentice Dean. (Lois’s husband, Edgar joined the family later in Denver.) Between late June and late July 1940, Margaret kept a detailed diary of their journey, which began in New Jersey and Washington, D. C., and she took many black and white photographs of Lois and her family.
This donation is comprised of a full scan of Margaret’s 1940 travel diary as a pdf in 14 files, 31 files of scanned images, a full transcription of the diary by the donor, and an article on the diary, also by the donor, titled “Diving Out West in 1940.” |
