The firm eventually expanded to London, and then to Philadelphia in 1783 where it became Pragers, Lamberts & Co. (later Prager & Co.). The business was run by the Prager family, members of which moved to Philadelphia in the late 1700s, and it was first located at 216 Front Street and the moved to 47 North Front Street. They specialized in importing, exporting, and cargo insurance. This donation consists primarily of incoming and outgoing correspondence of the Pragers from the early 19th century, some of which is in French and Yiddish. Among the earliest items in the collection are few financial documents, surveys, a bound account book, fabric samples, and a couple letters, all from the late 1700s. Later items in the collection concern family matters along with the family’s attempts, starting in the 1880s and lasting into the early 20th century, to recover funds owed to them via French Spoliation claims.
