This small collection of Wistar family papers contains material from Dr. Caspar Wistar (1761-1818) and his wife Elizabeth M. Wistar, as well as and in bulk documents from their son Dr. Mifflin Wistar (1811-1872). From Caspar Wistar there are a few receipts and manuscripts from Caspar Wistar. From Mifflin Wistar there is a sizeable collection of receipts and business documents dating from 1840 to 1862. Additionally, there is a folder of clippings from the mid to late 1800s pertaining to the "Wistar Parties," a tradition of hosting weekly meetings with local and visiting learned men that began with Caspar Wistar. |
