520 |a The Parrishes were a prominent Quaker family in Philadelphia, many of whose members were involved in relief or service organizations. They were connected by marriage with the Maxfield, Cox, and Wright families, all of which are represented in this collection. Individuals depicted include the abolitionists William Wright (1770-1846), a leader of the Underground Railroad in Lancaster County, and Dillwyn Parrish (1809-1886), president of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, as well as the well-known artist Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966). Several generations of women are also represented, including a silhouette of Sarah Parrish (1739-1825) and photos of Deborah Parrish Wright (1773-1856) and Susannah Maxfield Parrish (1803-1884), among others. The collection includes seven daguerreotypes, one ambrotype, one tintype, eight cartes de visite, six paper prints, one cabinet card, one silhouette, several miscellaneous letters and documents, and one newspaper (the August 1991 issue of New York-Pennsylvania Collector, which features several articles about Maxfield Parrish). Many of the photos are credited to Philadelphia studios such as Gutekunst & Bro., but there are also two from Paris studios, including an image of Maxfield Parrish at age 7. An item-level inventory is available. A few of the identifications are uncertain.
