The First Slavonic Wreath of the Free Eagle was founded in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1896 by representatives of the Society of St. John Nepomucene and the Society of St. Stephen. The organization was incorporated in 1901and changed its name to the First Slovak Wreath of the Free Eagle in 1929. It provided life, disability, and health insurance to members, awarded scholarships, and promoted physical fitness.
