The collection includes correspondence dealing with the routine work of a congressman and some letters on conditions in the southern states during Reconstruction. The letters are extremely detailed and rich, such as the letter from a man in Virginia who had been driven out of his home and threatened with his life for not agreeing with slavery. He wrote to Broomall asking Congress to take harsher action against the Southern slaveholders through Reconstruction. Account ledgers and business reciepts are also included for a mutual company called Broomall and Ward. These accounts give a glimpse of the state and practice of the personal investments of Broomall and those who invested with him. Broomall was also a member of the Union League, and his membership fee check is included.
