520 |a Dr. Edward Shippen (1826-1911) served as a surgeon in the United States Navy. Shippen descended from Edward Shippen, the first mayor of Philadelphia. Dr. Shippen married Mary Katherine (Catherine) Paul, daughter of Dr. John Rodman Paul and Elizabeth Duffield Neill, in 1853. The couple had several children, including Katherine Paul Shippen (b. 1863), who married Frederick A. Packard (b. 1862) in 1893. Spanning 23 boxes and over two hundred and fifty years, the collection primarily documents the life and career of Dr. Shippen through correspondence, clippings, booklets, pamphlets, and photographs. There are several boxes of letters that directly detail Shippen's military service and time onboard the USS Dolphin and Wabash and include letters Shippen wrote to his wife. Additional material in the collection includes several of Shippen's diaries and notebooks; invitations, member cards, programs, booklets, calling cards, and other miscellaneous printed material and ephemera; certificates and diplomas; bills and receipts; and artifacts. Additions to the collection include eight volumes as follows: two scrapbooks from Dr. Shippen to his wife during his cruise on the U. S. Brig Dolphin, 1855-1856; three letterbooks, 1862-1868; scrapbook, 1839 (items pasted into a 1790 ledger); notebook on lectures to the senior class of the College of New Jersey, 1842-1843; and notebook containing notes on Homer's Illiad and other courses, circa 1842. Number of volumes and linear footage have been updated to show additions.
