Summary: John Sergeant graduated from Princeton 1795 and was a Philadelphia lawyer who represented Pennsylvania in the House of Representatives and was president of the Pennsylvania Board of Canal Commissioners. These papers relate to activities of the United States Bank, circa 1806-1831; the national banking situation; currency and tariff issues; the building of canals and communications facilities, 1821-1828; Indian appropriations, Cherokee memorials to Congress, 1821-1835; important legal cases; applications for governmental positions; personal and domestic affairs. Included are: "A Slight Geographical and Political Sketch of Peru," 1823; "An Essay on the Necessity of a General Federation among the Spanish American States and a Plan for its Organization," by Colonel D. Bernardo Monteagudo, Lima, Peru, 1825; will of Samuel Rowland Fisher, 1783; agreements and correspondence on land transactions in Washington, D.C., including material on Robert Morris, John Nicholson, James Greenleaf, and General Walter Stewart; letters of William Wirt, Nicholas Biddle, Daniel Webster, James Buchanan, Sam Bayard, Horace Binney, and numerous others.
