Known officially as the 67th New York Infantry, the First Long Island Volunteers were raised in Brooklyn in 1861. The recruits were predominantly Irish-born. Most of these documents were written by Edmund K. Russell, who became commanding officer of Companky K in 1863 as 1st Lieutenant. He was eventually promoted to Captian and later finished the war as a Major.
