Item Description:	"Second [American] issue of the first edition"--Williams. The true first issue of Alice was published by Macmillan in London in 1865 in a print run of 2,000 copies. However, both the artist and author were unhappy with the poor quality printing and insisted that it be reprinted. Whereupon Macmillan sold the rest of the print run to Appleton in New York who then proceeded to publish a US edition using the 1866 American title page and the existing sheets from the 1865 English edition. This is the earliest obtainable issue having the Appleton "cancellans" title page. Signatures: pi⁴ 2pi² B-N⁸. LC copy has newspaper article laid-in: Recent deaths. Author of "Alice in Wonderland"; Portrait of Alice Liddell, apparently excerpted from a magazine, mounted inside upper board.
