Photographs taken at the Societatea Banateana-Vasile Alecsandri museum in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. The museum was opened by the society in 1993, and is located in a room of the Descent of the Holy Spirit Romanian Orthodox Church, Philadelphia's first Romanian Orthodox parish founded in 1913 by society members in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia. Images include historical membership cards, pins and ribbons, traditional Romanian dress including costumes worn by early society members in Philadelphia on festive occasions, society charters and documents, membership lists and portraits, photographs, paintings, and various other materials donated by society members and their descendents. (1) - (3) Membership badges, ribbons, buttons, and cards used by members of Societatea Banateana-Vasile Alecsandri, circa 1907 to present. The large ribbon in the Romanian national colors (at top) was worn by society member Gavrila Milos as "Nas" (sponsor) of the society's embroidered flag in 1938. Being the "nas" or "nasa" (male or female sponsor) for such an event was considered a high honor in the community. The bottom large ribbon was worn by the flag standard bearer, Dumitru ("Mita") Bogdan, a founding father of both Societatea Banateana and Descent of the Holy Spirit Romanian Orthodox Church. (4) Romanian folk costume worn by George ("Geddje") Magdin as a Calusarii dancer. Upper left: Hand embroidered baptismal dress worn by Marie Farca, daughter of George Farca, society president (1939). [See related family photographs.] (5) Romanian folk costume worn by Florence Magdin, wife of George Magdin. The red stringed skirt is a specific feature of a certain type of Romanian Banat women's skirt called an "opreg" or "fota cu ciucuri". (13) Manuscript list of the founding members of Societatea Banateana, July 15, 1906, with badges from the Societatea Banateana-Vasile Alecsandri, still worn today, using the Romanian national colors for festive occasions (shown) or black for funerals. A large group of Romanian-Americans from Greater Philadelphia, organized by society member and church president of Descent of the Holy Spirit, Viorel Vasile, participated in the orderly demonstration.
