Summary: These three images showcase The Honorable Raymond Pace Alexander (1898-1974), who served as a Philadelphia City Councilman and Judge of the Court of Common Pleas during the 1950s and 1960s, respectively. Two of the photographs include his wife, Sadie Tanner Mosell Alexander (1898-1989), and business and civic leader Albert M. Greenfield (1887-1967). In the third photo, Alexander sits at the head table between a fellow guest and speaker.

During the late 1920s and late 1930s, Alexander was one of thirteen black attorneys practicing law in Philadelphia. He took on many desegregation cases as well as criminal cases. In one unique case in 1939, Alexander represented an African American couple who, having been on relief, came into unexpected wealth. Alexander handled the business transfer allowing the couple to put their money toward the upgrade of a block of dilapidated tenement dwellings, with the stipulation that “colored workmen” carry out at least seventy-five percent of the work. The real estate company of Albert Greenfield , who is pictured with Alexander and his wife in two of the photographs shown here, also took part in the transaction.
