Portrait of Edwin Austin Abbey by a currently unidentified artist from the Simon Gratz collection [0250A]. Abbey was a Philadephia-born muralist, illustrator, and painter. He flourished at the beginning of what is now referred to as the "golden age" of illustration, and is best known for his drawings and paintings of Shakespearean and Victorian subjects, as well as for his painting of Edward VII's coronation. His most famous set of murals, The Quest of the Holy Grail, adorns the Boston Public Library. This digital record contains one image one portrait from folder 1 (labeled as: "Abbey, Edwin Austin Painters, etc.") of box 7/39 (labeled as: "American Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers: Abbey, Edwin Austin-Curran, Charles C"). The folder also contains three letter written by Abbey, and two additional portraits which are not currently digitized. |
