Summary: George Gilbert was a pupil of William Mason in 1818 and succeeded him in business. He engraved for "The Casket" from 1826-1839 and most of his work was for books and Sunday school publications. There are also engravings by R. S. Gilbert. There are three volumes in this collection. The first is George Gilbert's specimen book, which includes religious vignettes, animals, and landscapes. None are signed but the note at the front states that they are all by him. Volume two contains examples of other engravers' work, including several examples from France and England. Many are covers of serials, like Godey's Lady's Book. Volume three is called "Scraps and Engravings," and includes many examples by R. S. Gilbert.
