Summary: The papers include the diary kept by Charles Kirby, who was a private in the 1st Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Mexican War. The entries date from December 1846, when he enlisted, to January 1848. Kirby wrote regularly and described troop movements, engagements, and the weather. He also noted the number of deaths that day. The volume also has longer accounts of some engagements, including the march to and siege of Puebla, an annotated list of the men of Company H, and numerous newspaper clippings pasted in, which describe Mexico and the war. There are also some business records from the 1820s, written in Spanish. Associated documents with the collection include family letters, correspondence with Glenwood Cemetery (where Kirby was buried), genealogy, pension claims, and Kirby's indentures. There is also an 1833 sampler, a bit of lace, and a cased image of Kirby and his wife Eliza, and one of their daughter Julia.
