Summary: The Guild of Patient Account Management of Philadelphia and Vicinity was founded in 1958 as the Guild of Hospital Credit Managers. It was founded to assist in the establishment and administration of credit programs and practices local hospitals. Among its primary goals were to support sound credit practices and ensure that credit personnel in hospitals were kept up-to-date on new methods and techniques. Representing the guild were credit managers from numerous local medical facilities, including the Pennsylvania Hospital, Abington Memorial Hospital, Wills Eye Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and the Albert Einstein Medical Center. In the mid-1970s, the the Guild of Hospital Credit Managers added "of Philadelphia and Vicinity" to its title to better reflect its membership and growth. In 1979,the group became the Guild of Patient Account Managers of Philadelphia and Vicinity. Later, it replaced "Managers" with "Management." Sometime in the 1990s, the guild became the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Guild of Patient Account Managers, which today remains as the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management. The Philadelphia Chapter of the AAHAM serves as a "resource center for information, education, and advocacy in the areas of reimbursement, admitting and registration, data management, medical records, [and] patient relations." (www.aahamphila.org) This collection of records of the Guild of Patient Account Management of Philadelphia and Vicinity spans from 1958 to 1994, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1970s and 1980s. It originated from member Lloyd C. Minter, one of the guild's original founders. He served for many years as the patient account manager of the Albert Einstein Medical Center, and he was actively involved in the guild from its founding to his retirement in 1978. Many papers in the collection were directed to him and therefore bear his name. The collection consist primarily of meeting minutes and correspondence, though there are also scattered event flyers and papers, general membership material, and miscellaneous administrative documents, such as copies of by-laws. Additionally, there are two folders of member publications produced by the guild: a bulletin calledThe Guild Crier and a newsletter titledThe Guild Bulletin.
