Though done by an amateur, and in damaged condition, this small painting in brown and black is of interest as one of the earliest, if not the earliest portrait extant which originated in Pennsylvania." (Paintings and Miniatures at the HSP, p. 142) "Johannes Kelpius led a group of about 40 German pietists who settled in Germantown in 1694. This drawing, by an English doctor, clock-maker, and member of a pietist sect, may be the first portrait done in Pennsylvania." (Finding Philadelphia's Past, p. 14)
