520 |a In 1886, two events occurred that illuminated a dichotomy in the immigrant experience in America: the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, symbol of American freedom, and the Haymarket riot, a landmark in the history of repression in the labor movement. This collection, which grew out of a colloquium commemorating both events, is organized around four broad themes: the changing representation of America as a model republic in the eyes of European workers, the actual experiences of immigrants working in America, immigrant radicalism, and the evolution of republicanism form the 1880s to the 1920s. In this first English language edition, Marianned Debouzy presents essays that look at European immigration to America from a transatlantic perspective. The contributors see immigrants not as uprooted but as vital, interactive links between the old and new worlds.
