Summary: The State Penitentiary for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania is situated on 13 acres known as "Cherry Hill," two miles northwest of the Court House in Philadelphia, PA. The Pennsylvania Legislature authorized its construction on March 20, 1821. Construction began on May 22, 1823 and was completed in 1829. This volume consists of a list of prisoner discharges arranged by prisoner number, 1885-1889, and scrapbook. The first 80 pages contain newspaper clippings from 1890 with articles relating to Richard Vaux's campaign for Congress as a Democratic nominee for the 3rd district. Vaux also served as a prison inspector for over 53 years and as president of its board for over 43 years.
