Her father was George Vasley, a civil engineer born in Ukraine, and the family settled in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Helen worked most of her life as a nurse and founded the MERCI (Medical Equipment Recovery of Clean Inventory) program that's still active through the University of Virginia health system. This collection documents Helen's life from the late 1940s to the present times. Most of the items originated from her family life in central Pennsylvania. Items in the donation include family letters, cards, ephemera, photographs and photo albums, vital records, children's books and drawings, school notes and notebooks, and other books and magazines. Additionally, there is a sizeable stamp collection and a few A-V items, such as CDs, audio cassette tapes, and audio reels. Many items in the collection are in Czech and Slovak, with some in German and Ukrainian or Russian.
