About one-third of the material relates to Caspar Wistar (1696-1752) and Caspar Wistar, Jr. (1761-1818). These papers include a facsimile of a 1721 allegiance to the King signed by the elder Caspar Wistar as well as a 1752 inventory of goods and chattel belonging to Caspar, Jr. and some of his personal correspondence. Also included is a folder of personal bills and receipts of Bartholomew Wistar, 1775-1784. This folder also contains a 1778 affidavit signed by him in which he pledges not to bear arms against the King upon return to Philadelphia from London. Other Wistar family members represented in this collection are Mary, Kitty, Sarah, Isaac Jones Wistar, Richard, and Thomas. Most of those papers are personal correspondence and range in date from late 18th to mid-19th century. Photocopies of the following items were added to the collection on 4/28/2009. The originals are at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia: * 3 letters from Isaac Wistar to his aunt, Mrs. Lloyd P. Smith (16 July 1854, 17 February 1856, 18 March 1856), written from San Francisco * 4 letters from Governor Andrew G. Curtin to Colonel Isaac Wistar of the 71st Regt. Of Pennsylvania Volunteers (11 November 1861, 17 January 1862, 18 January 1862, 5 May 1862) * Commission for William Penrose to serve as Lieutenant-Colonel of the 71st Regt., dated 3 January 1862 * Letter from Secretary of War Stanton to Brigadier General Isaac Wistar relating to his commission, dated 6 April 1863 * Printed event announcement postcard from the Academy of Natural Sciences sent to Isaac Wistar, dated 17 February 1892
