Summary: John Francis Marion was born in Norfolk, VA in 1922 and lived in several cities throughout the United States before permanently settling in Philadelphia. A noted historian and author and graduate of Penn State University, Marion worked for several magazines in Philadelphia, including "Philadelphia Magazine," "Commercial America," and "The Pennsylvania Traveler," before publishing his first book, "Lucrezia Bori of the Metropolitan Opera." Marion later went on to publish several books on various topics, including walking tours of historic Philadelphia, famous cemeteries, medical history, Charleston, S. C., and many others. The collection includes correspondence (personal and business), lecture and manuscript notes, pamphlets, newspaper clippings and other printed material. The correspondence primarily deals with his business dealings as a literary agent, author, college instructor, and tour guide. Much of the printed material deals with issues of local significance such as Philadelphia families and locales. Also included are copies of published articles and manuscripts of books written by Marion and information on books he was involved in getting published as a literary agent. Marion also taught individual courses at many Philadelphia educational institutions, and information pertaining to those classes such as notes, class lists, grade lists, and rosters are included in the collection.
