The bulk of the collection, however, consists of letters and printed matter that relates to Wharton Barker, Jacob's grandson who was born and raised in Philadelphia. Wharton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and held several local memberships. He founded the Penn Monthly and The American, a weekly publication; and he was the Populist candidate for president in the 1900 election. Also included are a few papers of Thomas Barker, the U.S. Consul in Antwerp during the 1830s.
