Summary: The J.G. Brill Company, organized in 1868 and located in Philadelphia, was an internationally known builder of steam and electric passenger, commercial, and industrial cars and trucks. The advantages of operating plants in different parts of the country encouraged Brill to acquire control of the American Car Company, the G.C. Kuhlman Car Company, the John Stephenson Company, and the Wason Manufacturing Company. These companies were all incorporated in 1906 and in 1926 the J.G. Brill Company became the Brill Corporation. The company continued to expand until 1 August 1944 when it merged with the American Car and Foundry Motors Company to become the ACF-Brill Motors Company. The collection includes images of construction of train beds, cars, and other train parts. A large group of photographs depicts step-by-step production of train parts. The major series consists of photographs arranged by the Brill Company's photo order department. Other smaller series of photographs are arranged alphabetically by state; individual rail line; and foreign countries which imported Brill cars. U.S. government war goods and other industrial pieces are also represented. Additionally, there are Brill Order Books, 1887-1940, which list the car work order number, usually (though not always) the corresponding photo order number, as well as the name of the rail line, the item produced, and the dates of order and delivery.
