Summary: This folder contains former volume 4, pages 1 to 75 of the extra illustrated version of John Galt's The Life, Studies and Works of Benjamin West. It contains letters to and from West concerning the Royal Academy of Arts, West's visit to Philadelphia, a letter from West to King George III, personal correspondences, and prints of notable contemporaries and landscapes. The earliest dated materials are from the 1760s and go to the 1810s. Oversize pages are in box 3, folder 5.

John Galt wrote two volumes covering the life of Benjamin West. The first was published in 1816 and contains biographical information from West’s birth to his travels in Italy in the 1760s. The second volume contains West’s move to London and his subsequent career as historical painter to King George III, and ends with West’s death in 1820.
