Color lithograph by George Lehman of Childs & Lehman, from a drawing by artist John Lewis Krimmel (1786-1821), depicting a lively scene in a country tavern. Patrons are shown dancing, drinking, canoodling, and smoking while an African American man plays the fiddle. Born in Germany, Krimmel emigrated to Philadelphia in 1809 and soon became a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Krimmel was a painter of genre scenes and was among the first artists in America to portray free blacks. |
