Harriet Pierson, the war widow of Major Ward Wright Pierson, maintained a scrapbook collection of newspaper clippings, letters, photographs, maps, condolences, and memorabilia relating to her late husband’s military career and death. Materials contained in the scrapbook span 1917-1928. Image 001 is a receipt for Pierson’s posthumous awarding of the Distinguished Service Cross. The emblem was awarded to individuals for acts of heroism deemed “more than usually life-threatening.”; Image 002 is receipt for Pierson’s posthumous awarding of the Croix de Guerre, a distinction awarded within the French army roughly corresponding to a Distinguished Service Cross; Images 003-005 feature the program of the first reunion of the Army Company Pierson served in, Company L of the 315th regiment. Pierson’s portrait is located at the program’s centerfold.   |
