Image depicts the figure of Liberty, wrapped in an American flag, motioning to a printing press before an African-American, Native American, and Middle-Eastern woman, all wearing stereotypical dress. Another white woman stands to the right, wearing a cross and also motioning to the press. A white angel is pictured above, casting away a dark male figure. Broken weapons lie at the foot of the press, and books are piled in front of them, with scrolls that read "Faust, Caxon, Bradford," and "Franklin, Thomas." Designed and engraved by J. Sartain; writing engraved by J. and W.W. Warr; designed and etched by Saitorn in 1814. |
