description First of two pocket diaries by Daniel Dougherty, who served as a captain with Company H, 63rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers during the American Civil War. Dougherty lived, at least for a time, in Allegheny County, and was married with several children, though little else is known about him. His diaries describe Civil War campaigns in Maryland, northern Virginia, and Gettysburg and recount conditions on the battlefield and in the camps during his service. Entries list the names and ranks of men in the company, including men on furlough, sick and wounded men (usually describing the type of wound), accounts, and dispensation of food, shoes, and clothing to soldiers. Dougherty also writes about weather conditions, notes time of day and place of encampment, and details any troop movements for the day.

This online record contains images of the entire diary.
