Summary: Image: 1/4 plate; Man and woman seated closely and holding hands, color applied to both their cheeks and mouths; Woman with hair parted in the center and smoothed down over the head, under a dark bonnet set well back on the head and decorated with dark ribbons, wearing dark dress with long wide sleeves and wide jagged edged white undersleeves, a wide whitework collar lying flat and not meeting at the front, a narrow dark ribbon around her neck, a brooch at her throat, and a ring on her finger; Man with hair puffed at the forehead, and muttonchop whiskers, wearing a dark jacket, pants, and vest, with a white shirt with a high upturned collar, and a wide dark bow tie. Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s). Mat: Nonpariel with ornate matte finish (late 1850s onward). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a gilded geometric design both front and back, with exterior and interior gilded edge trim, with a red velvet pinchpad, and a red velvet cushion embossed with the photographer's studio name and address (ca. 1850).
